Weather Review
Armidale NSW - 2007

2007 was a
year of above average rain and warmer than normal temperatures. Fine sunny
weather prevailed on 179 days.
RAINFALL: Overall
2007 was a wet year with well above average rainfall in February, March,
August, October, November and December. May, July and September were very dry
months, particularly September which recorded only 8.4 mm. The total for the year of 838.8 mm was 52 mm higher than the
annual average, and it was the wettest year since 1999.
TEMPERATURES: Although 2007 was

temperatures were warmer than normal for the first five months followed by a
very cold seven week period of winter from the second week in June to the third
week in July. August and September were milder than normal, and temperatures in
October were the warmest for 67 years. Wet and cloudy conditions in November
and December kept those months much cooler than normal. Overnight temperatures
were close to normal at the beginning of the year, but were cooler than normal
in July and September. November and December experienced mostly mild
nights.
The
hottest day of the year was January 13th with 32.8 degrees, and the coldest
overnight temperature was July 16th with -8.7 degrees. The coldest day was June
20th with a maximum temperature of a chilly 4.7 degrees along with very light
snowfalls.
WINDS:
Winds were light in April and May, and light to moderate in all
other months. The year totaled 13 windy days* (annual average 19 days) with 7
of them occurring in August and September. Winds at
EVAPORATION: Total for the year was 1111.8 millimetres
which was 109 mm less than the LTA. This was caused by the higher than normal
number of cloudy days. Average daily evaporation for the year was 3.1 mm.
FROSTS:
Due to the increased number of cloudy nights, and the milder than normal
temperatures in the second half of winter, the total number of frosts was
reduced to 88 which is 10 less than the long term average and was the lowest
since 1998 which recorded 79 frosts. July was the frostiest month recording 23
frosts, and it was unusual that there were no frosts in April which
is the first time this has happened since 1989. There were 25 light frosts, 41
moderate frosts and 22 severe frosts. The first frost was on March 31st which
produced a frost-free period 132 days over the summer of 2006-07, and the last frost was on October 21st.
FOGS: There were fogs on 37 days which is 5 days
more than the annual average. The foggiest months were April and May with 11
and 10 foggy days respectively. There were 37 early morning fogs and 4 evening
fogs.
SNOW: Snow fell on two days. There was a very light
snowfall in the early morning of June 20th, and on July 8th there were light
falls at
THUNDERSTORMS: Thunderstorm
activity was much higher than normal with storms on 50 days which is the
highest on record since reliable records commenced in 1977. February was the
month with the most number of storms (10 days), and October at 9 days was the
highest on record for that month.
HAIL: Hail fell on 4 days. Small hailstones on
October 25th & 31st, and December 11th. Soft haill on one day - June 27th.
The annual average is 3.3 hail days.
FLOODS: Minor
flooding occurred in Dumaresq Creek on January 1st, March 1st, overnight on
August 20th/21st, November 7th & 23rd and December 4th, 10th & 11th.
