Armidale NSW - 2007

© Compiled and written by Peter Burr, using data recorded at the Bureau of Meteorology weather station at East Armidale. No part of this review may be reproduced for commercial purposes without prior permission from the author.

2007 was a year of above average rain and warmer than normal temperatures. Fine sunny weather prevailed on 179 days.

RAINFALL:  Overall 2007 was a wet year with well above average rainfall in February, March, August, October, November and December. May, July and September were very dry months, particularly September which recorded only 8.4 mm. The total for the year of 838.8 mm was 52 mm higher than the annual average, and it was the wettest year since 1999.

TEMPERATURES:  Although 2007 was New South Wales’ warmest year since 1910, Armidale did not follow the state trend with 2007 coming in at the ninth warmest year for the same period.

Day temperatures were warmer than normal for the first five months followed by a very cold seven week period of winter from the second week in June to the third week in July. August and September were milder than normal, and temperatures in October were the warmest for 67 years. Wet and cloudy conditions in November and December kept those months much cooler than normal. Overnight temperatures were close to normal at the beginning of the year, but were cooler than normal in July and September. November and December experienced mostly mild nights.

The hottest day of the year was January 13th with 32.8 degrees, and the coldest overnight temperature was July 16th with -8.7 degrees. The coldest day was June 20th with a maximum temperature of a chilly 4.7 degrees along with very light snowfalls.

WINDS:  Winds were light in April and May, and light to moderate in all other months. The year totaled 13 windy days* (annual average 19 days) with 7 of them occurring in August and September. Winds at 3pm were westerly on 98 days, easterly on 91 days, south-westerly on 81 days, southerly on 31 days, south-easterly on 25 days, north-easterly on 22 days, north-westerly on 12 days, and northerly on 5 days.

EVAPORATION:  Total for the year was 1111.8 millimetres which was 109 mm less than the LTA. This was caused by the higher than normal number of cloudy days. Average daily evaporation for the year was 3.1 mm.

FROSTS:  Due to the increased number of cloudy nights, and the milder than normal temperatures in the second half of winter, the total number of frosts was reduced to 88 which is 10 less than the long term average and was the lowest since 1998 which recorded 79 frosts. July was the frostiest month recording 23 frosts, and it was unusual that there were no frosts in April which is the first time this has happened since 1989. There were 25 light frosts, 41 moderate frosts and 22 severe frosts. The first frost was on March 31st which produced a frost-free period 132 days over the summer of 2006-07, and the last frost was on October 21st.

FOGS:  There were fogs on 37 days which is 5 days more than the annual average. The foggiest months were April and May with 11 and 10 foggy days respectively. There were 37 early morning fogs and 4 evening fogs.

SNOW:  Snow fell on two days. There was a very light snowfall in the early morning of June 20th, and on July 8th there were light falls at 11.30am and 4.40pm. The snow did not settle on the ground on any of these occasions. The annual average is 2.3 days of snow.

THUNDERSTORMS:  Thunderstorm activity was much higher than normal with storms on 50 days which is the highest on record since reliable records commenced in 1977. February was the month with the most number of storms (10 days), and October at 9 days was the highest on record for that month.

HAIL:  Hail fell on 4 days. Small hailstones on October 25th & 31st, and December 11th. Soft haill on one day - June 27th. The annual average is 3.3 hail days.

FLOODS:  Minor flooding occurred in Dumaresq Creek on January 1st, March 1st, overnight on August 20th/21st, November 7th & 23rd and December 4th, 10th & 11th.

LTA - Long Term Average     * Windy day - average wind speed higher than 20 kms per hour: 9am to 6pm
